What areas of the body best respond to liposuction?

Toronto Liposuction Surgeon Dr. Robert Backstein believes that knowing which body areas respond well to liposuction is a key to excellent results. While a reliable technique to sculpt and recontour the body, liposuction works better in some body areas than in others. It is widely accepted that body areas responding well to liposuction include: abdomen, love handles, saddle bags, arms, lateral thighs, inner thighs, sub-mental region (below chin), and the back. Many patients request liposuction of other areas such as the buttocks and calves. Buttock liposuction tends to be somewhat less predictable in terms of long-term results and should be recommended only after a thorough assessment of the area.

Liposuction of the calves and ankle areas can also be problematic since the problem of overly large calves and ankles is often not due to fatty deposits (liposuction can only be used to remove fatty deposits) but instead due to bony architecture or muscle volume. Furthermore, liposuction below the knee is notorious for swelling that can take many months to resolve. It is important to keep in mind that skin quality and elasticity is always a factor in determining whether liposuction is right in any body area, even those typically considered body areas that respond well. In a patient with loose, redundant skin, liposuction may need to be replaced or augmented with another procedure such as tummy tuck, thigh lift, arm lift, neck lift etc.
