Various Stages of Facelift Recovery

October 2, 2014

A facelift is the most effective way to reverse the signs of aging. After a facelift your face and neck will be tighter and firmer, revealing a rejuvenated you!

Facelift Recovery Stages

For the best results from your facelift, make sure you follow Dr. Backstein’s post-surgery recommendations, which will take you through a safe and speedy recovery. Understanding the recovery process will help you plan your post-surgery weeks, so you can return to your normal lifestyle as soon as possible.

The first few days after your facelift surgery: 48 to 72 hours

You will need plenty of rest immediately after your surgery. Any fatigue or nausea may be due to your pain medications. You’ll start feeling better after just a few days.

You will have supportive dressings on your face after surgery. These dressings improve the healing process, and help prevent swelling. The dressings will likely be removed in your follow-up appointment, when Dr. Backstein will ensure your skin is healing properly.

Discomfort is normal after facelift surgery, and your medications will alleviate it. Swelling and bruising is also normal, and will start fading after 3 or 4 days. Uneven swelling is normal, too, so this shouldn’t be cause for worry.

Week 1 to 2 after surgery

Your bruising will continue to fade during this time. You will see the most visible improvements during these weeks. But make sure you continue to take it easy! Avoid all strenuous activities, though you can do light exercise like walking.

Avoid wearing makeup for the first one or two weeks after surgery. Dr. Backstein will let you know when you can resume your regular make up regime.

Week 3 to 4 after surgery

Initially, your incisions will appear pink or light red. Your incisions will start to improve during this time, and you will start feeling—and looking—great! Many people go back to work 3 weeks after their facelift surgery.

1 month after surgery

Your skin will continue to heal, and any changes in skin sensation will continue to improve, for up to a year after your surgery. Scars will begin to fade into invisibility during this time.

Skin care after facelift surgery

You must protect your skin from the sun’s damaging UV rays for a few months after your surgery. Apply sunscreen (at least factor 30) but also wear a sunhat. Avoiding direct sunlight is your best option. In addition to the sun, excess heat should be avoided after facelift surgery.

Make sure you drink plenty of water, as proper hydration helps cleanse your body and heals your skin!
