Can I get a tummy tuck after a C-section?

January 18, 2014

9iprtxvtThe tummy tuck – or, to put it more technically, abdominoplasty – is a procedure done to erase excessive, sagging and loose skin and remove unwelcome fat while also toning the abdominal muscles. A tummy tuck done by Dr. Backstein can also get rid of stretch marks (including post-pregnancy stretch marks) and flatten out a rounded tummy.

By way of a quick refresher, a tummy tuck is a multiple-step operation that improves the look and feel of a patient’s abdominal area. Dr. Backstein will start the procedure with an incision done low on the abdominal wall, to ideally make it unnoticeable or at least hard-to-spot when wearing a bikini or bathing suit. Next, the muscle layer is firmly tightened, excess fat and skin removed, and the belly button placed in an appealing spot on the abdominal wall. And a tummy tuck done by Dr. Backstein also involves the removal of love handles and upper abdominal fat through liposuction.

And there’s good news for new moms: a tummy tuck can be performed on women who give birth through both a vaginal delivery as well as a C-section.

Here at our Toronto cosmestic surgery clinic, Dr. Backstein performs a lot of tummy tucks for C-section-delivery mothers. In fact, a large share of the tummy tucks done each year by Dr. Backstein are performed on women who have had one or more C-section births.

Having a C-section doesn’t interfere with the tummy tuck procedure in any way at all. A caesarean section will leave a noticeable scar above the patient’s pubic area – some mothers don’t mind this, but others find it unsightly.

But if you have a C-section scar you want to get rid of, don’t worry. One thing to keep in mind is that the scar needs to be given time to properly heal after delivery. Your body needs to heal up too! However, once your energy returns after birth, the C-section srac can be dealt with.

With a visit to Dr. Backstein, the C-section scar can be removed through an expertly done tummy tuck. Once this procedure is successful, the C-section scar will be gone. While there will be a scar as a result of the tummy tuck, it will be less noticeable and more easily hidden. If you have a C-section and are feeling like it’s the right time to do something about it, give Dr. Backstein a call today.
