September 8, 2014

Eyelid Surgery TechniquesMaking corrections to the eyelids has become a highly sought-after procedure. Changes to the eyelids during aging can cause them to change in appearance over time. By making aesthetics corrections above and below the eyes, patients are restoring their appearance.

There are a number of ways that doctors can use the procedure to provide the results you’re looking for. By understanding the procedures available, you can choose the one that’s right for your needs.

Understanding the Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is the correction of deformities and defects related to the eyelids. The procedure can involve the removal or repositioning of tissues such as adipose and skin, while helping treating the muscles and connective tissues.

The incisions made will depend on the desired result. For example, upper blepharoplasty involves treatments of the upper eyelid, whereas the lower portion can be treated using transcutaneous or transconjunctival blepharoplasty techniques.

Which Procedure is Right For You?

The following types of eyelid procedures can provide a number of different results based on your needs. Consider the differences so that you can make the right choice in your treatment:

Upper Blepharoplasty – This procedure helps to enhance the crease of the upper eyelid by removing excess skin from the area. Furthermore, it doesn’t alter the position of the brow or affect the fullness of the eyelids.

Lower Blepharoplasty – Treatments to the lower eyelid include a few different procedures, including the following:

  • Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty – This procedure removes excess adipose tissue from the lower lid. This is done using either a laser or excision tool. The treatment leaves no visible scarring, with minimal swelling or bruising.
  • Transcutaneous Blepharoplasty – Using this procedure, patients can successfully remove excess skin, adipose tissue, and muscle. Hidden fat pockets are easily removed providing lasting benefits for patients.
  • Tissue-Sparing Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty – Bulging of the lower eyelid can be treated using this procedure. This new procedure is unique in that it corrects the orbital septum, which allows fat to protrude as it becomes weak. Strengthening this area allows the correction of bulging without the removal of fat.

In addition, there are a number of specialized procedures for the anatomical differences that occur among different cultures. East Asian eyelids require use of the East Asian Blepharoplasty procedure.

This procedure, also known as double eyelid surgery, works by creating a second eyelid in individuals that lack the crease seen in Western eyes. This opens the eye to allow the iris to be seen more and creates a more youthful look in the process.

These techniques for eyelid surgery allow you to achieve the unique results for your preference and anatomical needs. Understanding the benefits of each will help you find the solution that will give you the absolute best results.
