How Your Surgeon Determines Which Eyelid Surgery Technique to Use

January 11, 2014

eyelid-surgery-techniqueEyelid surgery, technically known as blepharoplasty may not seem as exciting as a tummy tuck or breast augmentation, but it can have equally dramatic effects. While the eyes may or may not be the windows to the soul, they definitely reveal a lot of information about a person’s thoughts, mood, age or general health. And much of the broadcasting is done via the eyelids.

When you make an appointment to discuss eyelid surgery, your surgeon will base which technique to use on the specific issues that brought you into the office in the first place. There are generally two different cosmetic reasons that patients want eyelid surgery.

Skin Excess

As the name implies, skin excess refers to sagging, loose skin on the eyelids that hangs and bunches up and makes you look tired and quite a bit older than you actually are.

If this is the reason you are seeking eyelid surgery, the excess skin is removed from the eyelid, by making a small incision. If the issue is with the upper eyelid, the incision is made in one of the natural skin creases up there. If the excess is in the lower lids, the incision is made just below the eyelashes.

Eyelid Fullness

The other cosmetic issue that helps determine which blepharoplasty technique to use is known as eyelid fullness. This occurs when your eyelids have more volume than is necessary or is wanted, creating a chronically fatigued look. Everyone has natural fat pads in the eyelids that are supposed to be there. It’s when they begin to move around as part of the normal aging process that they become an issue.

The treatment for excess volume is to remove part of the collection of fat on the upper and/or lower lids so the tired look is gone and they are back in proportion.

Excess & Volume

It’s not uncommon for a patient to have both skin excess and excess volume in the eyelids. For these occasions, both a skin and fat excision are performed, and typically during the same surgery.

As it becomes more and more commonplace for people to seek out cosmetic procedures, both eyelid surgery techniques will likely grow in popularity. More people are taking measures to feel younger on the inside, and they want the outside to match. Eyelid surgery helps you look rested and restores a youthful look, which is an important part of the overall package.
