How to Maintain the Results of your Cosmetic Surgery

March 1, 2014

Cosmetic-SurgeryAfter any surgical procedure it is important to follow the homecare instructions provided by your doctor. By following a few simple rules, you can ensure greater healing and minimize risk of complications. Here are a cardinal rules for skin and health care and healing courtesy of Dr. Backstein, MD.

  • Care for your skin. Any time an incision is made, it is necessary to promote healthy healing. This can be done by keeping the wound clean, dry, and out of the sun. Use hypoallergenic products to avoid irritating the area.
  • Be patient. Healing takes time and patience. Avoid picking scabs, scratching irritation, and engaging in any vigorous activity right away.
  • Drink up. Increasing water can hydrate skin while flushing toxins and contributing to skin healing and rejuvenation.
  • Liposuction requires a healthy and balanced lifestyle to continue the slimming and shaping results achieved. A balanced diet and exercise are key to maintaining results long-term.
  • Quit Smoking. While smoking has no beneficial effects, it has a laundry list of negative ones. You are advised to quit smoking before your surgery as it impedes healing and blood flow, but after your facial surgery or anti-ageing fillers, why continue to engage in something that will reverse the process of youthful, rejuvenation? Let go of lines, wrinkles, dehydration, and cigarettes for good!
  • Maintain your weight. When procedures are performed at a specific weight, adding or losing excess amounts of weight can alter the results and leaving structures disproportionate. Avoid crash diets and binge eating to avoid the stretch and shrink cycles that cause damage and ageing to the skin.

Be sure to address any further questions and health concerns to your physician or contact Dr. Backstein!
