Is Liposuction and Tummy Tuck the Same?

August 21, 2014

Often discussed interchangeably, these two cosmetic treatments may have similar intentions and results but they are actually quite different procedures with different results and purposes. The may be used in conjunction and are both included in the popular “mommy makeover” treatment but the procedure involved differs greatly as do requirements for good candidacy.

Liposuction And Tummy Tuck

The Basics of Liposuction

Aim: Removes fat from any part of the body in order to slim and reshape specific areas, remove excess fat deposits, and improve body contours and proportions.

Suitable for: Healthy individuals with firm, elastic skin who are within 30% of their ideal weight but suffer from disproportionate fat deposits that do not respond to exercise.

Procedure: Small incisions are made and the targeted area is infused with a saline solution mixed with pain medication to reduce bleeding and pain. Cannula are inserted into the area and used to loosen the fat before it can be suctioned out. The procedure takes approximately 2 hours to perform and usually require anesthesia and intravenous sedation. It is performed as an in-patient procedure and costs an average of $2800 depending on your surgeon and the area you live in.

Recovery time: Recovery time for liposuction is anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks and may require some bed rest and limited activities during the recovery period.

Targeted areas: The face, legs, chest, flanks, back, arms, and buttocks are also potential areas that can be targeted by liposuction procedures.

The Basics of Tummy Tuck Procedures

Aim: To treat muscle separation above and below the belly button and to remove excessive or loose skin in the abdomen.

Suitable for: Formerly obese individuals or those whose skin has been stretched by multiple pregnancies.

Procedure: In a surgical procedure, the navel is separated from the rest of the tissues and the abdominal wall. The muscles underneath are pulled into a tighter position and excess tissue is removed. The flap of skin is pulled down and secured. The procedure lasts anywhere from 1 to 5 hours and is performed under general anesthetic as an in-patient procedure. Tummy tucks can cost around $5500 depending on your surgeon and the area you live in.

Recovery time: Recovery time for a tummy tuck procedure is much more extensive and may take anywhere from 4 weeks to a couple of months. During your recovery period your doctor will likely instruct you to avoid certain activities and tell you not to exercise or walk around too much until you have received approval.

Targeted areas: Tummy tucks can only be performed on the midsection and target the front and sides of the abdominal area.
