Does a Tummy Tuck Include Liposuction?

June 2, 2014

Liposuction and tummy tucks are two different surgical body contouring procedures which slim, tone and reshape the abdomen. However, both procedures are often performed together in a combination surgery to create the desired slimmer, firmer contour.

Liposuction & Tummy Tuck Surgery

A description of liposuction and tummy tuck surgery will help make the differences clearer.

Liposuction

Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, is the removal of stubborn deposits of fat which do not respond to diet and exercise. Liposuction does not affect the muscles beneath the fat, or the skin above the fat. Liposuction can, of course, be used to remove stubborn fat deposits from anywhere on the body.

There are several types of liposuction. Power assisted liposuction (PAL) is a very effective technique using a small cannula with a rapidly vibrating tip. This breaks up the targeted fat cells with rapid but small vibrations, and the fat is suctioned away.

After liposuction alone, however, the excess skin may sag, appearing loose and unsightly.

Tummy tuck

The tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, does not remove fat deposits. The tummy tuck tightens abdominal wall laxity and removes excess sagging skin.

The abdominal wall is a rubber-like sheet of muscle. It can loose firmness and become lax if it is stretched, as it is as during pregnancy. After the baby is born, the stretched abdominal wall may not be as firm as previously, and results in a slightly protruding belly. Multiple pregnancies stretch the abdominal wall still further.

Abdominal wall laxity means that even dieting and regular exercising will not produce a tight, toned abdomen, as the muscle itself must be resculpted. With tummy tuck surgery, the abdominal muscles are tightened and excess tissue is removed to create a firmer abdomen.

The tummy tuck also includes the removal of sagging or excess skin over the abdomen.

Suitable candidates for liposuction and tummy tuck

In addition to mothers who are not planning to have more children, the tummy tuck is an excellent body contouring procedure for people who have lost a great deal of weigh, and who now have sagging abdominal skin.

Both liposuction and the tummy tuck are recommended for healthy, non-smoking people who have reached a stable weight and want to improve their body contour. They are not weight loss procedures.

In conclusion, if you have a loosened abdominal wall, protruding belly and also have fatty deposits around the abdomen, you will benefit from a combination of tummy tuck and liposuction.
