Is Gynecomastia covered by OHIP?

Gynecomastia is definitely covered by OHIP. The Ministry of Health of Ontario offers coverage for this procedure, which involves the excision of excessive breast tissue located behind the nipple/areola and sometimes spread throughout the chest. Patients may show pseudogynecomastia (fatty tissue of the chest region), in which further surgery through liposuction is required in order to optimize the aesthetic results. This extended surgery is not covered by OHIP. Following through with the additional liposuction is not crucial, however the extra step taken will lead to an optimal cosmetic result. In very severe cases where the breast is enlarged and saggy, additional procedures may be required in order to tighten the skin, such as a breast lift, which again, is not covered by OHIP.

Do I need to wear a special garment after my Tummy Tuck?

Yes, tummy tuck patients should wear a compressive corset provided by Dr. Backstein for the first 3-4 weeks post plastic surgery.

Can men have liposuction?

Liposuction can play a role in the treatment of gynecomastia. Deoending on the sub-type of the individual gynecomastia case, Dr. Robert Backstein, Toronto Liposuction Surgeon may need to perform liposuction at the periphery of the male breast in order to optimize and perfect the surgical results. In particular, if a man's gynecomastia is isolated to a simple sub-areolar (behind the nipple) mass, but the rest of the breast is normal, supplementary liposuction will likely not be required. On the other hand, if the firm gynecomastia is associated with fatty tissue toward the periphery of the breast, Dr. Backstein will generally suggest supllemental liposuction of this fatty tissue in order to give the final result a perfected look.

Can scars be removed?

A common question I am asked by cosmetic surgery patients is if it is possible to use plastic surgery to remove scars. The short answer is "no". Cosmetic surgeons and plastic surgeons are trained to use meticulous, careful techniques to minimize scars and to place scars in inconspicuous areas on the body but we are unable to remove scars. Several treatments are available to improve the appearance of scars such as cortisone and laser treatments, but to date, full removal of scars is not possible.

Is it common for breast implants to rupture and leak?

Breast implant rupture and leaking is very uncommon and has essentially been eliminated with the advent of cohesive gel breast implants. Saline (salt water) implants will leak if the implant shell is damaged or if the fill-valve at the back of the implant fails. This will result in a deflation of the affected implant and a dramatic asymmetry requiring implant replacement. Silicone cohesive gel implants are prefilled with material of the same consistency as jello or a gummy-bear and have no fill-valve. As such leaking or deflation of these breast implants is essentially unheard of.

How long after my Tummy Tuck do I have to wait before I start exercising?

Light work outs involving exercises that do not strain the surgical incision or the abdominal muscles can begin at 2-3 weeks. This includes brisk walking or stationary bike riding. Heavier work outs including abdominal crunches, sit-ups and running should not be attempted for about 1 month.

How long does the surgery last?

Toronto Liposuction Surgeon Dr. Robert Backstein will take variable amounts of time to perform liposuction depending on the extent of work required for an individual patient. Typical surgical times are forty-five minutes up to as long as several hours.

What are the complications of having Labiaplasty (Female Genital Surgery)?

Complications of labiaplasty surgery can include infection, scarring, sensory loss or sensory changes to the labia area, and pigmentary changes. In rare cases, patients may complain of some discomfort when having sexual intercourse.

How long after my breast augmentation surgery should I wait before I wear a bra?

Dr. Backstein, Toronto breast augmentation specialist recommends the use of a sports bra for the first 6 weeks post-operative. A sports bra is will give excellent support, help decrease swelling and is easy to put on and take off. A bra with an underwire should not be used for the first 6 weeks post-op after breast implants surgery. An underwire can irritate the surgical incision in the case of a breast fold incision and can also cause an unsightly indentation at the bottom of the breast that can be persistent. Six weeks post-operative, any type of bra can be worn according to patient preference.

How long should I wait after my Tummy Tuck before returning to work?

Patients with jobs that require significant physical activity including bending, lifting, or quick movement will need about 4 weeks off before being able to return to full duties comfortably. Those patients with jobs not demanding physical activity can return to work after 2 weeks.
